What is the difference between a type A and type AC RCBO or RCD?

RCD’s and RCBO’s at some point in almost every electrical circuit within residential electrical installations.

However, not all RCD and RCBO’s are created equal. Older electrical installations mainly comprised of linear loads leakage currents would just contain AC waveform components and would trip a type AC RCD or RCBO. Modern installations are increasingly using electronic power converters, from LED lighting and EV chargers to inverter drives on washing machines, which can inject a DC biased leakage current.

This move to electronics can cause problems with type AC RCDs – Joe Robinson explores the difference between type AC and type A RCDs.
